4A – Forming An Opportunity Belief Submit Assignment
As incoming freshman come into their first year in college/university already determined to become the next U.S. Senator or leading cardiothoracic surgeon, there is a pulsing pressure on what they should major in. Fortunately, students can enter a university under an "exploratory" major where they will decide towards the end of their freshman year on what they would like to major in. Even yet, this approach has not been able to meet many undecided students into concluding their career path, aka major. According to UF's Academic Advising Center, about 38% of UF students change their major at the culmination of their freshman year while 61% of UF students change their major by the end of the sophomore year. This indecisiveness not only impacts a student time wise but also financially into taking courses that may not be useful for their desired major as well as take time from possible internships they could be in. An appropriate solution may be implementing a required course for freshman into exploring all the different majors and career paths such as pre-professional tracks offered at the University of Florida.
After speaking with three current students at UF, they too, believe this course can help a lot of students to discover their potential path or perhaps passion. They all agreed on having the course initializing with a test to see what qualities they can implement into the career path and later on go in depth in that major to see if you want to do it.
From the initial embark to now, this solution evolved into incorporation much feedback that now this new opportunity is more accurate in targeting freshman students compared to all the students in UF. Entrepreneurs should always be open to adapt and shape their opportunities based on the customer's feedback because, at the end of the day, they will be the one to make your opportunity become a bust or reality. It allows your opportunity to become more specific into what you can and will be able to do rather than it just being an idea waiting to be proofread.
I believe this is definitely a good opportunity. I personally have friends that had no idea what they were going to major in, and are now almost a year behind because they were just taking classes here and there to see what interested them. I think introducing one class that touches on a lot of different subjects could be a good idea to not only save time but also money. Great idea.
ReplyDeleteI think that this opportunity definitely exists, you even have evidence to prove it to be true. So many students stress out over not knowing what they want to do after college and can affect their schoolwork. A course helping them make a decision would definitely benefit everyone involved. I liked that you included statistics to support your opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI definitely believe this opportunity exists, being a freshman who's already changed majors twice now. I also liked your use of statistics in backing your potential opportunity. However, I think your opportunity would've been better supported through including more specific answers from your interviewees, or at least some background on them. For example, it would've been interesting to know if one of them had already changed majors, and to be able to compare their answer to, say, a junior or senior who's never changed majors.
