5A – Identifying Local Opportunities Submit Assignment

1. LifeSouth says cold weather has hurt blood supplies.

Due to the cold weather that surged into Florida, the severeness of the cold not only declined the blood donation in the state of Florida but effected nearby states such as Alabama and Georgia. 

The problem featured in the article that many donation centers had to close down temporarily and cancel blood drives. 

This problem can affect not only local Gainesville patients but even patients across the nations to even your own family if an unexpected blood loss were to require a blood transfusion. 



2. Ceiling collapse at Union County prison sends inmates to hospital. 

The bathroom ceiling at the Union County Reception and Medical Center in Lake Butler fell down and five inmates were transported to a local hospital. 

The problem presented in this article shows that the ceiling that collapsed on the inmates led towards transporting them to another location followed by inspecting the housing unit. 

This problem did not only affect the inmates and their injuries but caused an expensive bill for both the facility and the taxpayers in the county and state. As well, when an inmate is admitted as a patient, the inmate has more time towards patient contact and an individual nurse for themselves. 


3. Local solar companies brace for tariff.

The article presented of the executive branch in proposing to place a tax, tariff, on imported solar panels in order to produce more jobs and "protect" the American people.

The problem presented in this article is the negative impact it'll have on the solar panel industry here in the United States from lowering the demand for solar panels.

This problem not only affects the solar panel industry but even environmental initiatives through implementing more solar panels throughout various projects worldwide. This greatly will reduce the effort towards sustainable energy thus greatly rising electricity bills in various businesses and households.



4. Study to look at Impact of Nitrates on Florida's Springs. 

The article presented shows a problem in the amount of nitrate effecting the local springs in North Florida leading to a 3-year long research study to find out the cause of this effect.

The problem in this article presented is that the increase of nitrate, NO3-, in the springs in North Florida have not yet found a known source.

This problem from not knowing whether or not this known source could be from local construction can either terminate or change up many civil developmental plans in the future. As well, another concerning issue is how it will affect our spring bottled water production in the state of Florida. 



5. Doctors wary of painkiller prescription limits.

This article presents the chances of a patient in an increase in addiction based on the number of days they are prescribed for opioids.

The problem presented in this article are the negative effects of prescribing painkilling drugs where it has led to an increase in heroin usage. 

Not only does this problem effect various parties from patients to medical practitioners but to state and local officials into implementing this into a new regulation.

I actually heard about the ceiling collapse at the Union City prison and thought that was absolutely crazy. You did a really good job in completing this task.

  2. I think your problems are very relevant and I enjoyed how they were local issues. I also read about the doctors worried about prescription painkillers limit and found it to be an interesting debate. You did well summarizing the articles succinctly. The solar panel tariff news seems outrageous to me and you did well finding an article about how that will affect local businesses.

  3. I think you did a great job finding articles with problems as well as describing their problems and who's problem it is. I had never heard of these incidents even though they were local. The Union County prison story was very shocking to me because the medical bill for the injured people will probably be more than what it would have cost to fix the ceiling in the first place.
